Hi, I’m Lyndsay – Scottish and now living in Australia, wife of a lovely Irish husband, mother to two incredibly active and outdoor-loving wee boys and dog owner to our little madam spoodle, ‘Yalumba’. Life is hectic but genuinely I wouldn’t have it any other way. So, what has this got to do with WonderSOL, I hear you ask?
Life Pre-Kids
I was a sun worshiper growing up (yes, if you live in Scotland, you generally get super excited if the sun comes out and bask in it from sunrise to sunset!). We loved trips to Europe, but I always recall getting badly burnt, before smothering myself in after sun and having to wear a big baggy t-shirt (even in the pool/sea) for the rest of the holiday.
Later I spent five years living and teaching in Dubai, where I rarely considered my skin…I lacked care and enough education.
My Motherhood Challenge
Fast forward 20 years, I am more educated and mature!
I am also paying for those early decisions with health scares...I want to make sure my kids and their generation minimise the risk of being in the same position at my age.
Stepping into motherhood, I became acutely aware of the risks of sun exposure in children. I constantly have the sunscreen, hats and rashies at the ready! But it’s stressful isn’t it? Special sunscreen under 12 months… hats constantly falling off… muslins draped across the basinet (but don’t block the airflow)… it was enough to not want to leave the house. The anxiety was real!
The beach was another level again. Bringing a parasol and sunshade everywhere… chasing after the kids to keep them covered… applying a
sandy mixture of sunscreen and grit all over like some horrendous infant
exfoliator. The efforts we go to, right?
Eventually I had had enough and started frantically Googling full-piece sun protection clothing for children. I couldn’t find anything that could protect them from head to toe!
The Solution
As soon as my maternity leave with baby #2 started, I knew I wanted to act the issue I had been mulling over for 2+ years. Since then, I have been working (20+) samples, (you should see the first effort!). Each one would be carefully trialled on my kids and then tweaked. It’s been a journey.
I’m extremely proud to now have a product of the highest quality; providing convenience for parents, something that babies and kids love to wear, has health (and safety) focus, and is still cute...WonderSOL!
